Morning Session: "Disciplinary Literacy (DL) is defined as the confluence of content knowledge, experiences, and skills merged with the ability to read, write, listen, speak, think critically and perform in a way that is meaningful within the context of a given field." - Wisconsin Definition  Workshop participants will discuss what disciplinary literacy is, how we utilize DL tools in the arts and what resources are available to support art skills and knowledge through DL tools.

Afternoon Session: Meet the Wisconsin DPI Fine Arts & Creativity Education Consultant and learn about DPI Services available. Other topics to be covered:
  • Arts Standard Update
  • Educator Effectivness Plan
  • Student Learning Outcomes

Wisconsin Teaching Standards Addressed:1, 4, 6, 7
Wisconsin Music Standards Addressed: C, E, F, G

The agenda for the day includes:

9:00am- 12:00am Disciplinary Literacy Tools in the Arts

This interactive session will include activities that support the use of disciplinary literacy tools- writing, reading, thinking, listening, speaking, and performing to deepen student arts learning.

12:00pm-1:00pm Participants lunch on own.

1:00pm- 3:00pm Student Learning Objectives in the Arts

Join us for this working session which will include examples of arts Student Learning Outcomes and time to write SLOs in the arts.


Julie Palkowski is the Fine Arts and Creativity Education Consultant for the State of Wisconsin-Department of Public instruction. She has served previously as an arts administrator with school districts in Rockford, Illinois and Madison, Wisconsin. Prior to these positions Dr. Palkowski has worked as an Instructional Supervisor, a K4-8th Grade Principal, Music Teacher, and Summer Enrichment Coordinator. She has facilitated arts sessions including in the areas of: arts integration, Six Traits Writing +1 Connections to the Arts, and Disciplinary Literacy Tools in the Arts.
